Created In Christ Jesus for Good Works
(Eph. 2:10)
There is the classic children's story about a little red hen who found some seed to grow wheat. She planted the seed, harvested the crop, took the crop to the mill, prepared the dough for baking and finally baked the bread. At each step along the way, the little red hen asked a pig, a cat and a duck for help. Each time they refused. The pig, the cat and the duck were too tired to plant the seed, they were indifferent at harvest time, were too busy to take it to the mill and were just cantankerous when it came time to bake the bread. However, the story does not end with the baking of the bread. As the aroma of fresh baked bread filled the air, the little red hen asked. Who will eat the bread? At this the pig, the cat and the duck were ready and willing to participate. The response from the little red hen was immediate - No! She and her chicks would eat the bread. And such was only fair and just - they had done the work. The pig, the cat and the duck only wanted the reward without paying the price necessary to deserve the reward.
Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.' .Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.' (Matthew 25:34-36, 41-43).
Brethren, it is true we are not saved by meritorious works (Ephesians 2:8-9). But it is also true the saved will be working (Ephesians 2:10). Let us not expect the reward without first working. -Larry
