What We Believe
The following represent principles that are founded in biblical truth and govern the beliefs and teachings of the
MEIGS AVENUE CHURCH OF CHRIST:

  1. We believe the Bible is the complete, inerrant, and inspired Word of God.
  2. We believe in man's creation from the dust of the earth by God.
  3. We believe the six days of creation in Genesis 1 are six literal 24-hour periods.
  4. We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that he lived on earth, died, was buried, was bodily resurrected from the dead, and is now reigning in heaven over his kingdom.
  5. We believe salvation is only found in the name of Jesus.
  6. We believe mankind is saved by the grace of God and man's response of obedient faith.
  7. We believe baptism is immersion in water for the remission of sins and is essential to salvation and to membership in Christ's church.
  8. We believe Christ established only one church.
  9. We believe there are five avenues through which we must worship God - praying, giving, partaking of the Lord's Supper, singing, and preaching of the Word of God.
  10. We believe the music authorized by God in worship is vocal, verbal, and congregational. This is the only acceptable way to worship God in song.
  11. We believe the Lord's Supper is to be observed by Christians on every first day of the week, and only on the first day of the week, as part of God-approved worship.
  12. We believe a woman may not teach or otherwise have authority over a man in the church.
  13. We believe there is a need for qualified elders in every church, and the Lord has placed upon elders a certain authority to oversee and shepherd the flock
  14. We believe God established male leadership in the home.
  15. We believe marriage was established by God and designed to be a life-long union between a man and a woman.
  16. We believe an innocent person with a living spouse is permitted by God to divorce and remarry only when the other mate has committed fornication (Matthew 19:9).
  17. We believe all people, whether Christian or non-Christian, are subject to Jesus' teaching in Matt. 19:9.
  18. We believe one church has the right to assist another church in doing a work of evangelism.
  19. We believe it is scripturally permissible for a congregation to care for needy children by means of a legal home incorporated by the state (orphan's home).
  20. We believe a congregation, under the proper circumstances, may take funds from its treasury to provide benevolent assistance for one who is not a Christian.
  21. We believe it is scriptural to eat a common meal in the church's meeting facility, or on church property.
  22. We believe in making disciples of all people by preaching the gospel, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all things Christ has commanded.
  23. We believe God should approve of our social and recreational activities and such activities as dancing, drinking alcoholic beverages, mixed swimming and the like are not God-approved activities.
  24. We believe a person must love the Lord his God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength, and he should also love his neighbor has himself.
  25. We believe there is nothing greater for a person to do than to obey the Lord.

The above statements do not include all the biblical truth that we embrace.
The only complete statement of such is the Bible itself.
