God's Plan of Salvation
Bible Study Tools
|
- The Bible is complete, inerrant, and God-breathed (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
- God created the first man from the dust of the ground (Gen. 2:7).
- In the Genesis creation narrative (Gen. 1:1-31), each of the six days is a literal 24-hour period ("there was evening and there was morning").
- Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Father's full equal (John 10:30, 20:30-31). He lived on earth (1:14), died for our sins, was buried, and was raised bodily from the grave on the third day (1 Cor. 15:3-8). Jesus is now reigning over his kingdom at God's right hand (Acts 2:29-36).
- Salvation from sin is found only in the name of Jesus (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).
- Sinners are saved by God's grace through obedient faith (Eph. 2:8-9; 2 Thess. 1:8-9).
- Water baptism is immersion in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). This act of faith "in the working of God" (Col. 2:12) is essential to salvation (Acts 22:16) and membership in the body/church of Christ (2:47).
- Christ promised to establish not "my churches" but "my church," one church (Matt. 16:18).
- On the first day of every week, the assembled church is to worship God in prayer (1 Tim. 2:8), giving (1 Cor. 16:2), the reading and preaching of God's Word (1 Tim. 4:13), song and praise (Col. 3:16; Heb. 13:15), and observance of the Lord's Supper (Acts 20:7).
- In church worship authorized and pleasing music is vocal, verbal, and congregational (Eph. 5:19).
- The Lord's Supper is observed by true disciples on the first day of every week (Acts 20:7). Communion observance at any other time lacks biblical authority.
- In mixed-gender assemblies of the church, the Lord never permits a woman to teach men, lead them in prayer, or have authority over them (1 Tim. 2:8-12).
- Every congregation needs qualified elders (Tit. 1:5), men authorized by God's Word to oversee and shepherd the flock (1 Tim. 3:1-7; 1 Pet. 5:1-4).
- God appointed the man as head of the family. He is to lead his wife (Eph. 5:22-24) and take responsibility for the discipline and spiritual training of his children (6:4).
- God established marriage as a lifelong union between a man and a woman (Gen. 2:24).
- The Lord permits a person innocent of adultery to divorce and remarry only if his or her spouse is guilty of sexual infidelity (Matt. 19:9).
- All people (whether believers or not) are subject to God's marriage law (Mark 6:18).
- One congregation has every right to assist another congregation in the work of evangelism (Phil. 4:15-16).
- Adoption, foster care, and the support of children's homes are consistent with the Lord's mandate to "visit" needy children (Jas. 1:27).
- After giving first attention to its own needy members, the church family is then free to assist unbelievers (Gal. 6:10).
- Since the "church" is the assembly of believers and not the building in which Christians meet (Rom. 16:3-5), eating or enjoying other wholesome recreational activities in the building violates no biblical principle.
- The church is to preach the Gospel and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything Christ has commanded (Matt. 28:18-20).
- In recreational activities, as in all things, a Christian is to be "holy" (1 Pet. 1:15). This means abstinence from things that arouse lust or hurt one's influence - immoral dancing, mixed swimming in public places, watching vulgar movies, social drinking, and so on.
- A true disciple loves the Lord God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loves his neighbor as himself (Mark 12:30-31).
- Nothing is more important than obedient trust in the Lord (Heb. 11:6).
